United launches carbon offset scheme

23 Apr 2009 by Mark Caswell

United Airlines has joined the growing list of carriers offering a carbon offsetting programme. The scheme gives passengers the opportunity to offset their flights against renewable energy and reforestation projects.

The airline has developed a carbon calculator, viewable at united.com/carbonoffset, allowing customers to make a donation to one of four offset programmes offered by partners Sustainable Travel International.

When Business Traveller checked a return trip from London to New York, travelling in June, we were advised that a total of 1.4346 metric tons of carbon should be offset, and were given the following donation options:

  • International Reforestation projects - US$17.22
  • US Renewable Energy projects - US$45.09
  • Gold Standard projects - US$51.65
  • United Portfolio (a combination of the three initiatives above) – US$33.80
