Taj to debut in South Africa

12 Mar 2009 by Mark Caswell

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces has announced it will open a property in Cape Town before the end of this year.

The Taj Cape Town will be located on St George’s Mall in the city’s historic centre, and will combine a new-build tower with two iconic buildings: The Temple Chambers (also known as The Board of Executors and dating back to 1890), and the South African Reserve Bank Building.

The hotel’s 155 rooms and suites, as well as 22 luxury residences, will be spread across the buildings, with those in the tower featuring floor-to-ceiling glass facades and private balconies.  Most of the rooms will have views of Table Mountain, the city’s St George’s Cathedral, and The Parliament and Gardens, while the Club floor will offer a private lounge and butler service.

There will be four food and beverages outlets including a cocktail bar and cigar lounge, Indian speciality restaurant Masala Kraft housed within the banking section of the property, Grill, featuring international and local cuisine and an outdoor dining terrace, and Oyster Bar, offering seafood dishes and South African wines.

The hotel will have a meetings capacity of 100 people, and Jiva Grande Spa will feature six treatment rooms, a gym and a heated indoor pool.

The Taj Group currently has 15 properties in the Indian Ocean, Europe, Bhutan, the US and the Middle East. The Palace building of the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower in Mumbai is currently closed for repairs following the terrorists attacks late last year, although the Tower section of the hotel reopened in December (see online news December 12, 2008).
