Gran Melia to open three properties in 2009

18 Feb 2009 by Mark Caswell

Spanish hotel group Sol Melia will unveil three new properties under its premium Gran Melia brand this year, including a new-build hotel in Shanghai.

Earlier this month the group opened the doors to its renovated Gran Melia Colon property in Seville, which had previously operated as Hotel Tryp Colon, another of Sol Melia’s brands. The hotel is located in the city’s historic quarter, close to Seville’s famous Giralda bell tower, and features 189 rooms and suites.

In June the group will welcome its first hotel in China, the 687-room Gran Melia Shanghai. The new-build property will be located in Pudong’s Lu Jia Zui Financial District, and will feature 2,500sqm of spa facilities, including a health club, fitness centre and swimming pool.

Finally the Gran Melia Crete is slated for a summer 2009 opening, and will feature 250 ocean-facing junior suites and 50 villas, as well as a marina and private beach. Sol Melia also plans to open the Gran Melia Roma in the Italian capital next year.

The group says the Gran Melia’s “seven essential points of differentiation” are: Red Glove service (a play on the themes of white glove service and the red carpet), leading hotels, meeting concierge facilities, resort designer pools, spa experiences and signature dining concepts.
