Keep fit tube map unveiled

24 Jan 2009 by Mark Caswell

London-based business travellers can now find out how many calories they will burn by walking between underground stations instead of hopping on the tube, thanks to a new map released this week.

The map, compiled by volunteers on behalf of the insurance firm Pru Health, records the number of steps needed to walk between neighbouring tube stops. These figures can then converted into an approximate number of calories burned for each journey.

As example, 2,780 steps are needed to walk from London Victoria to Green Park (co-incidentally the daily walk taken to our offices by yours truly). Research suggests that roughly three calories are burned for every 100 steps taken, meaning the walk will burn just over 80 calories. Walking the return journey as well would result in over the half the recommended 10,000 daily steps being taken.
