Hailing a cab the smart way

17 Jan 2009

Everyone knows what a pain it is going from one meeting venue to another or even getting back to the hotel if you can’t hail a taxi easily.

Ever efficient Singapore has again streamlined matters for business travellers, setting up the new service 6-Dial-Cab (tel 6342 5222) with the help of the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Instead of fumbling to recall the taxi company's number, there is now a central line that links to the call centres of the city’s six taxi fleets: Comfort/CityCab, Smart Automobile, Prime Taxi, SMRT (formerly known as TIBS Taxis), Premier and TransCab. If the passenger has a preference for a particular taxi line, he can also call the number and ask to be forwarded. Should the number prove to be busy, the caller will be redirected until he gets through.

Comfort/CityCab has the biggest inventory of cabs in Singapore with 15,000 units, followed by SMRT with 3,000 units, Premier with 2,300 units, TransCab with 2,200 units, Smart Automobile with 800 units and Prime Taxi with 350 units.

Previously, people wanting to book cabs would have to wait close to six to seven minutes for a taxi to be assigned one. The new service has been designed to banish this inconvenience.
