Samui Airport grows

12 Oct 2008

Samui Airport in southern Thailand recently unveiled the results of a US$14.7 million expansion that can accommodate 16,000 passengers daily or six million passengers annually.

The new complex consists of two new international terminals and the commercial Samui Park Avenue.

Owned by Bangkok Airways, the facility opened in 1989 to serve the passengers flown to the resort island by the airline. Today, it boasts a passenger area of 7,300sqm, four times more spacious than the previous space.

Following an environmentally friendly concept, none of the terminal buildings (except for the restaurants and shops) are air conditioned, but rather, rely on ceiling fans or natural ventilation.

The retail arcade, which is next to the terminals, features name outlets such as Jim Thompson and Bookazine. It is open from 7am to 10pm.

The airport also serves Thai Airways and Berjaya Air.
