Is the coffee shop the new office?

19 May 2008 by Mark Caswell

Over a quarter of us are now working regularly from coffee shops, according to recent research.

The survey of 1,000 workers, conducted by ICM Research on behalf of BT Openzone, shows that 26 per cent of respondents work from a coffee shop at least once a week.

The main reason given for working outside the office was lack of office space, with those polled also citing reduced interruptions as a benefit of heading for the coffee shop.

And in a sign that more and more people are relying on out-of-office workspace to continue working while travelling, nearly half (47 per cent) of those surveyed said they had used a coffee shop to work from while travelling on business.

Conveniently BT Openzone used the figures to announce two recent coffee shop wifi rollouts. All 330-odd Caffe Nero stores in the UK now offer wifi access with BT Openzone, while motorway service area operator Roadchef has announced free BT wifi access at its 29 UK locations, in conjunction with its Costa Coffee outlets.

Where is the least-likely place you have ever worked from? Found wifi access in a park or on the beach? Let us know on the businesstraveller.com forum - and don’t worry, if you think the boss might be watching you can always post anonymously…
