Star Alliance celebrates 10th birthday with member giveaway

16 May 2007 by business traveller

Star Alliance is offering one lucky member the chance to win a luxury around-the-world trip, and dozens of other experiences and award miles prizes, as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.

The alliance, whose membership has grown from founding airlines United, Air Canada, Thai, Lufthansa and SAS to stand at 17 carriers (with Air China, Shanghai Airlines and Turkish Airlines all due to join soon), is offering the winner the chance to create a once-in-a-lifetime trip, including first class travel with member airlines, plus $5,000 spending money loaded onto a prepaid Visa card.

The winner and their guest can choose five experiences from a list of ten Star Alliance destinations. Among the experiences on offer are a fighter jet flight, white water rafting and a helicopter ride in the US, grizzly bear watching, heli hiking and quad biking in Canada, wine tasting, great white shark spotting and a tree house stay in Kruger National Park, South Africa, or the chance to have breakfast with orangutans, get a suit tailored and visit the races in Singapore.

All alliance members have to do be entered into the draw for the 20-night trip is register and fly an international segment with any Star carrier between now and November 30, 2007, and answer the tie-breaker question: "How many kilometres did Star Alliance carriers fly in July 2006?".

Star is also giving away a monthly prize of one of the ten destination experiences, including business class flights and $1,000 on a Visa prepaid card, between June and October. And during the same period each member airline is offering 10,000 award miles per month to one of their frequent flyer members making a flight.

And if you miss out on all this, Star is giving away another 16 prizes per month between June and October, including Tumi luggage, Apple video iPods and bottles of champagne - by our reckoning that's a total of over 170 prizes available to members over the next few months.

Star Alliance is the oldest global airline alliance, its main rivals being Oneworld (founded by BA, American, Qantas, Cathay Pacific and Canadian Airlines), and Sky Team (led by Air France, Delta, Korean Air and Aero Mexico). Star was also the recipient of Best Airline Alliance in last year's Business Traveller Awards.
