Easyjet returns to Zurich

14 Mar 2007 by business traveller

Good news for budget-minded travellers heading to Zurich from north of the Thames. Easyjet has announced it will return to the Zurich route later this year. The carrier used to serve the Swiss banking centre in the past but pulled out of the airport a couple of years ago in a dispute over landing fees.

Swiss budget airline Helvetic stepped in to fill the gap but this airline had little identity in the UK market and eventually abandoned the service last year.

Easyjet will fly twice a day from September 18 with good timings for day trippers particularly those originating in the UK. Monday to Friday schedules call for departures from Luton at 0705 and 1840 arriving in Zurich at 0955 and 2125. Inbound services depart Zurich at 1025 and 2155 reaching Luton at 1110 and 2240. Return fares start at £56.

In other London-Zurich route news, Swiss has brought forward its first flight from City airport (LCY) so as to better compete with British Airways which enters the route with a four flight a day frequency on March 25.

BA's first flight of the day will be at 0700 giving an arrival into Zurich at 0945 which is ideal for a city whose working day starts early. Swiss' first flight out of LCY wasn't so competitive. It left at 0825 reaching Zurich at 1110. But yesterday the carrier announced the introduction of a new and earlier flight. It will leave at 0700 from LCY arriving into Zurich slightly before BA at 0935. In total Swiss will operate up to eight flights a day on the route.
