British Airways economy passengers will from next month have the option of buying an alternative "enhanced" meal for between £15 and £18.
The carrier will offer five choices — Gourmet Dining, Taste of Britain, Great British Breakfast, Healthy Choice and Vegetarian Kitchen — to World Traveller passengers from May 12.
The new meals will be available on BA services from London Heathrow to Seattle, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Mexico City, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver and Atlanta.
Gourmet Dining
Taste of Britain
Passengers need to pre-book their meal at ba.com/managemybooking at some point between 30 days and 24 hours prior to travel.
BA said in a statement: "Each dish has been specially designed to taste great at 30,000ft... with salmon from the Taste of Britain sourced from Loch Fyne and the beef cheek from Gourmet Dining coming from Herefordshire.
"The dishes also combine current food trends and good quality ingredients to offer customers a variety of options. For example, the Vegetarian Kitchen option features polenta crespelle with mascarpone."
Great British Breakfast
Healthy Choice
Vegetarian Kitchen
Colin Talbot, BA's head of catering, said: "We'll still be offering our complimentary menus on board, but we want to be able to offer our customers greater choice when flying with us.
"Whether it be a special occasion or just as a treat, these great new dishes are a way to make their flight even more memorable."
British Airways is currently offering Club World passengers free one-way upgrade to first class (see news, April 17).
