Willie Walsh, CEO of British Airways, is to address the United Nations in New York today.

He will be representing the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

During his speech, Willie will be setting out British Airways’ pledge, announced by WW in Hyderabad in February 2009, to reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions to 50% of 2005 levels by 2050. IATA is proposing this target be adopted industry-wide.

The target, the most ambitious set by any airline, means that British Airways will reduce its net carbon output from 16 million tonnes in 2005 to 8 million by mid-century.

Broadening the pledge to other IATA airlines will place aviation at the forefront of progressive policies towards Global Warming.

The IATA also proposes to make all growth within the industry carbon neutral by 2020. Key to this will be dropping out of the EU emissions trading scheme in favour of a global emissions trading market, it was reported in The Guardian, a paper I prefer to use for kindling, but which apparently has some following in these parts.

These announcements are thought to be an attempt to take the initiative before December’s climate change summit in Copenhagen, where the aviation industry expects a battering.
