cwoodwardParticipantMost of us here well know that stealing at airports from checked and unchecked baggage has been rife for the past many decades and represents something of a constant lottery for us all whatever airports we use.
Is the incidence of theft increasing ? I have no idea however possibly security cameras should perhaps be catching more of the thieves.
There are it seems thousands of reports online. A 5 minute trawl over breakfast unearthed these few of many recent reports.
The last one below that actually happened at check-in is almost unbelievable but appears to be truehttps://greekreporter.com/2023/01/13/athens-airport-employee-steal-passenger-luggage/

Anyone who steals my carry on will net the key to an old Skoda value 1500 quid, 2 second hand paperbacks from a charity shop, and a TESCO value meal cheese sandwich.
Edit, no I am not being modest here.

In this case, surveillance cameras caught the accused in the act, which is good in that they could be held accountable. However, this raises the question of how many similar theft instances may go undetected if not captured on security cameras. I believe TSA officials would benefit from wearing body cameras. This could help deter misconduct knowing one’s actions are being recorded, as well as ensure accountability even in areas not covered by stationary security cameras. Protecting passenger possessions from theft should be a top priority in maintaining trust in airport security procedures.
