Does anyone know if state tax on purchases in the US can be reclaimed when leaving the country in the same manner that you can reclaim UK VAT as a foreign visitor?

No it is not…….only the British make it easy for non residents to get tax back. Just about everywhere else makes it very hard ( Canada Australia) or simply does not allow it. Even UK citizens who are not resident can do this as I did when based overseas. I think it is mad that tax revenue is allowed to be so easily taken back and I simply do not buy ( no pun intended) that it would impact on the tourist $$$$. The low value of the £££ is what makes Britain attractive….
