South Africa’s commuter services almost halted by cable theft and looting

    A few years ago in the UK there were a number of incidents regarding cable theft.

    But these appear to have vanished recently.

    However a report from IRJ about South Africa’s commuter services makes disturbing reading.

    You can see photos where the overhead lines have been removed and it’s reported that even sections of track has been stolen.

    Even some stations, in the areas surrounding Jo’burg, have been destroyed.

    Clearly, the solution is to return to steam power.

    The anorak crowd will bring plenty of revenue.

    I speak as an ex-Rhodesia railways man.
