A close relative was due to fly AMS-BHX last Friday with KLM, arriving back “around lunchtime”. Checked in, no mention of flight cancellation. Her colleague then noticed both their boarding passes were for MUC. Approached KLM for explanation, told BHX flight cancelled because of the bad weather in AMS, but could not understand why they were being routed with LH. Colleague then spent forty minutes on phone to KLM to be told there was either the option to take a short flight to CDG then on to BHX, or wait six hours at AMS for next flight to BHX. Even the call centre questioned the wisdom of routing them further from their destination, resulting in arriving home around 2300. They decided to wait at AMS instead of killing time in the air.

Although not that travel-savvy, she accepts that some aircraft can handle bad weather, whilst others can’t. This family member has managed in the past to get the day wrong for a holiday flight, resulting in rerouting from LGW, then mixed up check-in and departure times (outbound to AMS a year ago!). Even with this “record”, she found it difficult to believe!
