The news hasn’t yet reached Europe …but the news was announced last Monday in Singapore.

Asia’s CNA reports that SIA has secured fifth-freedom rights between Tokyo, New York and return.

At this stage it is unclear when the route would start (if at all), whether or not SIA would code-share with another carrier and what the future holds for its existing route SIN-FRA-JFK.

SIA already flies SIN-EWR (NYC Newark) non-stop and this service would continue.

For details of fifth-freedom rights, how and where they operate and how tricky they are to obtain please see our recent feature from the November issue of the magazine.
