(I have started this thread under “Miscellaneous” as RIA is not listed under “Airlines.”)

Saudi Arabia has an ambitious plan to rival Emirates.

Last September news broke of a new Saudi airline called RIA. The idea is that RIA would be used to encourage tourism and, like the Gulfies, enter the competitive sixth-freedom marketplace.

RIA is being provided with a US$30 billion war chest. It will operate alongside the national carrier Saudia.

RIA will be based in Riyadh whereas Saudia’s HQ will remain in Jeddah.

But so far things haven’t gone according to plan.

RIA’s first CEO, Tony Douglas, quit a similar role at Etihad in autumn 2022.

Now news has emerged that Tony Douglas has left RIA after barely two months as CEO.
