TominScotlandParticipantI see we did not get any coverage of this on BT but it looks like a bit of careless driving to me, a bit like the BA 747 in Jo’burg!!

AnthonyDunnParticipantHow very embarrassing for QR and how utterly astonishing, bearing in mind that the FAA described the incident and damage as “serious”, that the aircraft continued on a trans-Atlantic crossing rather than returning to MIA to check the aircraft’s airworthiness.
I daresay that that thought will also have crossed the minds of the US National Transportation Safety Board. I shall await, with considerable interest, the NTSB report and Mr Al-Baker’s comments in response to this.

mkcol74ParticipantFrom what I’ve read on those links & elsewhere, the damage was only discovered on inspection at DOH, and the crew were not notified of the damage to the lighting by MIA control as they themselves didn’t know at the time – hence why the aircraft continued on rather than returning as nobody knew there was an issue.
I’ve also read that they went from intersection T1, so didn’t have the full ~13000 feet runway, but more like ~9000 feet.

AMcWhirterParticipantEarlier today there was a piece in Doha News. So far QR has not issued any comment.
What I’d forgotten about (and the Doha News piece mentions this) is the fact an EK A340 struck the MEL runway approach lights in 2009 when taking off.
The A340 was seriously damaged but on this occasion, the crew decided to jettison fuel and return to MEL.
