As readers will know a number of airlines around the world have introduced special retro liveries in recent years.

Now it’s the turn of Qatar Airways which, I believe, is the first Gulf airline to introduce a retro livery.

The aim is to celebrate the Doha-based airline’s 25th anniversary.

When Qatar Airways was founded it operated B747s rather than B777s.

The aircraft bearing this livery is a B777-300ER.

The paint job was entrusted to Airbus in Toulouse rather than Boeing in Seattle (or another contractor).

The special liveried B777-300ER is expected to enter commercial service in the near future.

    Correction.

I have now been informed that both Gulf Air and Saudia had previously introduced retro liveries previously.

Qatar Airways entrusted a paint job to Airbus? A $600 million paint job?

Indeed. That is what I find strange.

And not just that it’s an aircraft made by a rival manufacturer.

Qatar is not 25 years old. It was established in 1993 and commenced operations in 1994.

Giving the re-paint job to Airbus after the issues withe the A350 is odd indeed!
On a (sort of) related issue has anybody any information on when or even if the very nice Qatar lounge in T4 (which I have used several times) is going to open?

When QR first started operations in 1994 it was a different airline to what it later became.

Hence I would assume the “25 years” refers to when QR changed.

It’s the same company, it just happens to be 25 years since Al Bakar came in. And the retro livery happens to be from the original start up so well older than 25 years.
