These rumours have been discussed at length on various frequent flyer websites like Flyertalk (url=http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=498) and Australian Frequent Flyer (url=http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/qantas-frequent-flyer/).

Many of us now use AAdvantage as they have a better earn and burn rate than QF. There’s always the easy way to elite status on AA with the Gold or Platinum Challenge – see the Wikipedia page on this:

Of course, it’s much easier to achieve QF Platinum (oneworld emerald) than AA Executive Platinum.

With the fuel surcharges, easy, don’t book through QF – use AA (either online or over the phone) to buy your tickets, as they aren’t bound to charge the surcharges and fuel “fines” [as we call them]. I have saved quite a deal of money using this method.

Edited to add: This story on Channel 7’s morning breakfast program might answer some of your questions about the QFF scheme. The video highlights Clifford Reichlin, the owner of http://www.frequentflyer.com.au)
