When you checked the Singapore to Beijing fares you would have seen that the fares for the Boeing 777-ER and the A380 were the same but once the trip becomes part of a Star Alliance itinerary a surcharge is applied to the A380 flights only. The New suites are a big improvement and probably warrant a surcharge. I did not have much time for the older suites because of the severe limitations on legroom. As for superior service I think the service provided by SQ in First class rates in the top 4 airlines. I myself prefer Swiss.
To get back on topic if SQ feel that they are operating at a loss by participating in the star alliance rtw arrangement then their surcharge is justified and I will have to live with it
