There are two sets of cancellations.
The first set is in the immediate future and concerns flight crew affected by Omicron’s “high sick rate.”
Germany’s Aero.de reports that a number of long-haul flights from Frankfurt to the US have been cancelled over the Christmas period. Other routes could follow.
The second set is one which will affect many European carriers and not only Lufthansa.
Many routes and flights will be cancelled in January and February because omicron has led to a decline in advance bookings.
What about Lufthansa ?
This afternoon Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr told Frankfurter Allgemeine “we have to cancel 33,000 flights.” [paywall]
33,000 flights, or roughly 10 per cent of flights, will be axed between mid-January and throughout February “because of a sharp drop in bookings” said the CEO.
Aero.de has published some of the interview [DE].
Note that Lufthansa has not informed UK media of these developments.
