The Mongolian government owned MIAT is eyeing to become the 2nd ‘OW Connect’ member.
Fiji airlines was the first a few years back and has reportedly benefited hugely from the membership.

MIAT is a well established airline founded as far back as 1956 and after a spotty safety record up to 2000 flying Russian and Chinese aircraft it has evolved into a well run and expanding all Boeing airline with 15 modern aircraft .

Its international destinations have included HK daly since 2011 but now also include Frankfurt, Osaka and Tokyo,Seoul,Bangkok,Phuket and Istanbul along with several Chinese and Mongolian destinations.

The airline seems to fit well into the ‘OW Connect’ criteria of a well run expanding small airline that offers a primary destination not covered by major members of the alliance.

Whatever aircraft type it was, I don’t recall, but a late evening flight from PEK on MIAT had the most spacious Business Class set up I have ever encountered.

ULN is modern efficient and uncrowded, but about 40km from the city centre. The Lounge is a bit disappointing. Plenty of cashmere outlets to occupy your time.
