It is why my friend and I deliberately boycotted Russia last year when we had long intended to do the entire Trans-Siberian from end to end.

I will not, willingly, put one rouble, kopek, zloty, Euro or pound into a national kleptocracy run by a bunch of ex-KGB hoods and mafiosi. And I would strongly encourage any and all like minded individuals to do likewise.

Until Russia has been purged of its mafiosi leadership, it’s as firmly off limits to me as it was when I was security barred when in the UKMoD.

Wake up pleaseā€¦.russian missiles are in the inventories of both ukraine government & eastern rebels (who have real grievances) so who fired: I don’t know nor, apparently, the dutch. Almost certainly it was the rebels who shot it down in error – they had shot down government bombers earlier – why, rebel positions were being bombed ! Just be pleased that no other passenger aircraft were not shot down, some 16 other craft are reported as being targeted in the area before this incident. The place was effectively a war zone.

The stupidity was the use of airspace for commercial flights in an area of conflict and that was the prime reason for the tragedy.

AD: As to being barred, I was barred from visiting Syria as Assad’s idiots don’t know Taba is in Egypt, but I can easily see why brits in UKMoD might have travel restrictions though, less easily, why a tourist could be blocked from Syria (wonderful place in the pre Assad senior days)

I can only, knowing The Dutch well, and the affect on many of them as people, heard live in AUH Hotel as it was breaking news.

The Ghostly re-constructed fuselage was clever of The Dutch, to show clear and impacting evidence of their conclusions, as well as confronting. My heart goes out to the families who were there, and wept, and also to the reports conclusion that on forensic and medical evidence, there were signs of stress, both internally on PM’s, and the positions they were found in (clutching of seats was one example issued in some of the victims. It was likely some on board were conscious and aware for up to 90 seconds until they hit the ground.

One cannot imagine how a human being would feel or how you , us, would be in that situation.
This will be a haunting trauma for the relatives.

Let us hope that the Crime that has been committed here, is somehow drawn to a close, at least by the Criminal investigation, completely and deliberately separated from the politics. This is a sensible move by The Dutch, who must have faced extremely difficult and upsetting work.

It could also have been any aircraft, any Airline, and one of 160 that flew on that flight path that day. It is also sad it was an MH aircraft that added to the good Company’s downfall with the other incident still unsolved. Yes, the uses of flight paths and International related Organisations in the Aviation industry, need to change and learn lessons also.

But when i fly from Europe to The Middle East, there are very narrow corridors where you might consider it to be safe now?

I know that in Australia also, that empathy is high for their victims, and that the nations mourns for them, as we do our, other nationalities, and indeed the Specialist Medical and research teams who also died on board, who spent their lives to find ways fight disease and suffering, and had attended a conference. Also, the large amount of Children on board…perhaps we should give our time and energy to these thoughts, especially for those left behind to contemplate what their loved ones really went through.

    +1 Peter.

While we can be suspicious, we will in facts never know for sure who actually shot that missile. It seems however it was not voluntary (which is somewhat of a relief). That said, we are and will continue to be flooded with so called proofs from both sides. On a side note, whether we like it or not, President Putin got exactly what he wanted there, as he did with Iran and will get it in Syria…

Flying over a war zone was already stupid. And accepting to reduce there the altitude was another mistake. Crew and passengers paid the high price. May them rest in peace.
