Today, Friday 18 March, is Red Nose Day.

Comic Relief is a terrific cause to support, and is also supported by British Airways as their Global Charity Partner:

You can donate today using the envelope in your seatback, headphone kit or simply ask a cabin crew member.

An interesting radio programme on the founders of the original Red Nose Day, can be listened to wherever you are in the world:

Are BTers doing anything today to raise money?

No is the simple answer. Frankly I am fed up, year after year of Red Nose day’s and Children in Need where the bulk of the money goes abroad whilst there are a number of organisations in the UK which don’t get a look in.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment, but about 25% (around £20m) of Comic Relief’s charitable grants go to UK based causes, evidenced in the (publicly available and transparent..!) accounts:

Red Nose day/evening is extremely entertaining and its very sad that its needed.

Every year i organise a party with the plasma’s showing the events and instead of party presents, we collect dontations. 25% goes to Red Nose charities and the remainder is split between nominated charities decided on the evening. We always agree that at least 51% goes back to UK based charities and the overseas donations go to little known, but well run charities.

Like Nigel, I have never understood why the emphasis is on overseas charities.

But charity is important. Read the word Tzedakah in wiki from a general inforamtion point of view. I would be very interested to hear similar terms from other people for charity.

Well done VK for pointing Red Nose day out. When is Children in Need??

I think that part of the problem with events such as Red Nose day is a lot to do with celebrity ego and to be seen “doing something”. It is a shame that they don’t put more effort into UK charities.

Dispite the fact that Japan and New Zealand are relatively well off, I would rather give a few quid to helping the clear up of those devistated towns and villages in Japan or contributing towards restoring Christchurch Cathedral.

    1. the NZ earthquake is now playing second fiddle to the events in Japan.

    2. the Japan disaster

    3. displaced people in the middle east zone

and I know this may be a little out of order, but then I read about a pax moaning about the clock in the T5 lounge complex not working and perhaps part of his BA £9000 F ticket should be used for repairing it.

Sort of puts things into persepctive really.

    Have a great weekend.
