Hotel Chains and the confusion of 2018

    Whatever happened to the good old days of a Hyatt being a Hyatt …. or a Hilton being a Hilton ? The current myriad of chains with countless different associated brandings has become more confusing than the airlines and their offspring! Hyatt currently consist of the following ……

    Park Hyatt
    Grand Hyatt
    Hyatt Regency
    Hyatt Hotels
    Andaz
    Hyatt Centric
    Unbound Collection
    Hyatt Place
    Hyatt House
    Ziva
    Zilara
    Residence Club
    Miraval

    Are travellers really expected to stick to brand loyalty without taking a course in *hotelomatry* to know who it is they are being loyal to?

    Ask a representative panel of business travellers, maybe BT´s subscribers, to look at all the sub sets within the major brands IHG, Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, Starwood, Accor to name but 6, then list what the panel thinks is the prime market position/target market of the subsets.

    We have enough problems discerning a Hilton from say a Westin.

    The problem stem stems from few of the hotels actually own the bricks and mortar and owners have their own take on what the property should end up looking like.

    You have the same problem with most of the major car manufacturers where there is little distinction across the board.

    With car manufacturers isn’t it more to do with legislation ?

    Manufactuers have to meet a list of new regulations worldwide governing crash safety, pollution, pedestrian safety etc etc.

    To my mind that appears to have driven out any individuality from manufacturers’ models with a few very expensive exceptions.

    Volume cars have become like white goods which wasn’t the case in previous decades.

    I don’t know about other people but this just drives me away from the chains and towards independents where you are treated like a human and not a 16 digit number.

    And this came through as well: “Delta Hotels by Marriott adds first European property”.

    Isn’ t that confusing with Delta Airlines and Delta water faucets?!?
