This forum is essentially for air and other travel passengers who wish to exchange views on their travel needs and experiences. For once I would like to comment of the needs and experiences of those who work in the travel industry.

Many people who work in the airline business, and other forms of transport, are in a delicate position at the moment. They find that the airlines are drastically reducing their operations and even grounding the aircraft for periods of at least two months, such as Easyjet has just announced. These affected employees have no pay or are on some kind of income support but do not know what the future holds for them. They also do not know if there will be an airline industry to rejoin in the future.

It is, therefore, to be applauded that the NHS (or somebody else) has seen a possibility of some airline workers “helping out” during the coronavirus pandemic. Ex-nurses, retired doctors and many more are returning to the health system to aid the overwhelmed staff. But it is a very positive action to recognise the skills of a very different activity being usable directly in the attack on this disease and the measures to help overcome it. Our course they should be paid for their work. It should be either the salary of a health worker of an equivalent position into which they will be slotted or their previous airline salary.

For the government it makes no difference financially if what they pay out is for unemployment or for working in the NHS, or equivalent in other countries. There are tremendous advantages for all. The health service gets more help just when it is needed from people who have the skills, at least in part, to work in the system. The workers, themselves, are given motivation and a sense of purpose in a time of difficulty and uncertainty.

Does anyone else know of other iniciatives in the UK and other countries which are to be applauded? What other work provides the skills, at least in part to help in the health industry?
