At the start of the New Year Germany reduced its VAT on rail fares. It was a ‘green’ initiative. Until then VAT had been as high as 19 per cent for travellers taking long distance ICEs.

The new rate from July 1 will be 5 per cent.

This is good news for the fortunes of rail operators within mainland Europe. We reported recently that Air France had agreed not to compete with the TGV (as a condition of its state-funded bailout) on domestic journey times of 2.5 hrs or less.
