News now coming through from Germany says that Easyjet will partially close its Hamburg base owing to overcapacity.

It’s a setback for an airline which has been used to continual growth and which targets the business market.

According to airliners.de (German language) Easyjet, the third largest airline at Hamburg, will reduce its capacity by 70 per cent. It means the total number of seats offered by Easyjet in Hamburg will decline from 1.5 million today to 500,000 over the next 12 months.

It is not known which routes will be cancelled.

Easyjet currently operates 120 flights a week from Hamburg to 30 destinations.

Now reported by Reuters. Note that even though it’s reported the Hamburg base will be “shut” Easyjet will continue to serve the airport although flights will be reduced.
