As a celebrity myself, I find this a very worrying development.

Public asked to report sightings of flying celebrities

    FlyingMatters launches ‘celebrity flying watch’

The public are being asked to report sightings of flying celebrities at airports as part of a light-hearted campaign which aims to highlight the double standards of high profile anti-aviation campaigners. The campaign offers “double (standard) air miles” to those who report a sighting.

‘Celebrity Flying Watch’ is being launched this week with an advert, facebook group and twitter from aviation campaign group, FlyingMatters. It points to the difference between the words and actions of actresses Emma Thompson and Fay Ripley and singer James Blunt, celebrities who have taken a high profile stance against flying but are jetting off themselves.

Satirical magazine, Private Eye, has refused to carry the advert, which will appear in the Spectator and other outlets.

The director of FlyingMatters, Michelle Di Leo, said: “Private Eye was the obvious place for the advert since exposing double standards is supposed to be their speciality. But they simply told us that they would not accept it.

“I was absolutely astonished by their attitude which flies in the face of everything Private Eye is supposed to stand for. They confirmed that there was no question of legal issues.”

She also pointed out that Private Eye regularly carries advertisements from airlines including a full-page in the current issue from Air New Zealand.

FlyingMatters Chairman, former Labour minister Brian Wilson, said: “Preaching one thing and doing another is a form of behaviour which we are entitled to draw attention to. It is deeply ironic for Private Eye to suppress freedom of speech because it disagrees with what is being said.

“Ian Hislop has made a good living out of mocking the double standards of others, particularly in politics and the media. It is disappointing that he should now set himself up as censor when others try to do the same.”

I think it is a good idea really, given the facts that they openly go on about an airport expansion which is desperately needed for Heathrow and the UK economy, but then spend half their lives jetting around the world, why not? Of course no one wants an airport at their doorstep but these so called celebrities and stars don’t mind using it and its facilities on a regular basis. Never seen Emma Thompson getting to LA on a boat, have you? Yes they all use planes all the time yet fight a decent airport in the making, lets be honest, the state LHR is in at the moment, apart from the fine T5, is shocking and makes the UK the laughing stock of other nations. While LHR looses out, FRA, AMS and CDG are laughing all the way to the bank. Don’t forget FRA is yet to biuld another runway…
