In January next year, I want to tour both islands of New Zealand.

I will fly into Christchurch and out of Auckland, so at some point will catch the ferry across from Picton to Wellington.

Is the best way of hiring a car to achieve that by doing a separate hire for each island, so Christchurch to Picton, and then Wellington to Auckland? or do car hire companies have special deals to cope with this?

I think you will find that car hire companies will only do one way rentals within the islands and won’t allow you to cross from one to another. That certainly was the case, although that might have changed more recently.
