VintageKrugParticipantExcellent news today as it emerges that Captain Peter Burkhill will be returning to BA as a 777 pilot.
PB was the “hero Pilot” who was at the command of the 777 BA38 which crashed at LHR nearly three years ago.

Fascinating Control Tower Audio with LHR Ground Radar video from the day BA38 crashed:

Listen to how calmly the Captain, Peter Burkhill, informs them of the MayDay and how authoritative he is seconds later when informing the crew to evacuate. Impressive.
Control Tower does a sterling job switching runways and managing go-arounds.
You can also see how quickly the rescue crews got to the aircraft on the visual recording.
A very lucky escape for those on board, with only one broken leg recorded.

BullfrogParticipant“Great news” although I do not know what really happened on that flight.
It did make me laugh that some passengers were interviewed afterwards & their response was “just felt like a bad landing”.
I had heard from my sources that Gordon Brown (our then PM) was taking a flight at the same time that the 777 in question was landing. I was told that ‘electronic jamming’ devices used in protecting the PM may have caused the problems on the 777.

BunnahabhainParticipantI’d like to recommend Peter’s book Thirty Seconds to Impact which also featured in a recent article by him in Airliner World magazine (Key Publishing). He does mention in the book that Gordon’s departure was delayed as a result, but no suspicion that he was associated with the cause of the accident!

DisgustedofSwieqiParticipantThis is very good news. Capt Burkhill’s departure was not under happy circumstances and given the fact that he and his crew performed admirably, this left a sour taste.
For those wondering, the problem involved ice forming in part of the engine fuel supply mechanism and partially restricting the flow of fuel.
The AAIB report makes interesting reading.
