travelworldParticipantYes, they bought GB Airways, a BA franchisee which operated flights to Spain and various other Med destinations.

VintageKrugParticipantWith hindsight, selling GO wasn’t the best plan.
However, at the time, BA needed the cash for investment and it was pragmatic to focus on the core “premium” offering in which BA specialises. It was also Stansted based, which wasn’t ideal, being even more of a backwater then than is the case now.

I seem to recall, though may have misread, that formerlyDoS was involved in the transaction in some way when he had a desk in BA’s Viscount House offices next to T1 and spent twelve months on various pieces of work at British Airways. It may have been another poster, either way was under NDA.
I’m not certain BA has ever actually made “cutbacks” in its slot use at LGW, which was never as slot constrained as LHR is; BA simply ended a franchise agreement with GB Airways and EasyJet took those routes. up.

I was not involved in the sale of Go Fly! and Viscount House was nowhere near Terminal 1, it was near Hatton Cross tube and the threshold of 27L.

FormerlyDoSParticipantI love the posts saying that people only use easyJet, because they have no choice.
Quite a number of competitors have tried to take them on, for example Aer Lingus opened a base at LGW.
easyJet has grown and prospered because it has a product that people like and buy. I use it regularly and it is a consistent, excellent, experience.
A real test would be the introduction of Vueling with a substantial base and sustained financial backing (and I’m talking 5 years plus, which would be needed to build the brand), as this is also an excellent contemporary airline with a better product than easyJet.

FormerlyDoSParticipant“When do the Vikings start their LGW pillaging ?”
If you mean Norwegian, I don’t think they have the cost base to challenge easy, in fact their cost base is scary due to Scandinavian compensation and social costs. Good airline, though.
