While passing through Newcastle Airport last week I noticed that bmi Diamond Club, Gold and Silver, card holders are entitled to use the BA Lounge there in recognition of bmi dropping its Durham Tees-Valley (Teeside) service. Although those wanting the fastest way to London from Teeside should save themselves the journey 40miles north to Newcastle, its probably quicker to jump on the train in Darlington to reach London.

The majority of bmi passengers formerly making use of the Teesside to Heathrow link were connecting onward or from the ‘UK’s only hub airport.’

Those seeking the fastest journey time from the Tees Valley region to London would always have made use of the rail link from Darlington.

The loss of the bmi service is therefore a huge inconvenience to Tees Valley-based international travellers and, since the drive North to Newcastle is infinitely less stressful than the transfer from King’s Cross to Heathrow, British Airways would appear to be exhibiting (unusual) commercial savvy in encouraging bmi cardholders to use their connecting services.

Presumably, by the time the lounge invitation period expires (September 2009 IIRC), BA will be hoping that the BD cardholders will have attained status in the Executive Club.
