Although there doesn’t appear to be any official mention of it yet on the airline’s website, it has just been communicated that the bmi Regional route between Birmingham and Aberdeen will cease operation shortly:

We would like to inform you that the route between Birmingham and Aberdeen has not performed as expected and with no sign of the situation improving bmi Regional has taken the difficult decision to cancel this service after eighteen months. The last flights will take place on 29 October 2010 and any passengers who are booked for travel after this time will be contacted by bmi and either rescheduled where possible or refunded.

This is an interesting move, as speculation hitherto had been that it was the ‘Regional’ routes which were performing more strongly than some others. Perhaps, then, it’s just another bmi fleet shuffle….

A representative of Bmi has just confirmed the cancellation of the route, and added the following note:

“As a result of the cancellation, the Aberdeen to Manchester service will receive a much-needed capacity boost. A sixth rotation will be added on the route from the start of the winter 2010 schedule in October, enabling us to meet the demand for seats during the peak afternoon travel period.”
