JohntyrellParticipantI’m looking for a top-notch hotel in central London to take my wife for our 25th wedding anniversary. Ideally somewhere with spa facilities, and ideally not a chain hotel. Money no object – any ideas?

VintageKrugParticipantI think you are looking for two things here; a romantic but centrally located hotel, and also a great spa. The two may be mutually exclusive, but with a “money no object” remit you should find something appropriate.
For trips like this you would get great value from an American Express Platinum or Centurion card, with access to Fine Hotels and Resorts rates, which include several hundred dollars of perks and extras:

Personally, there is so much going on in London that it does seem rather a shame to spend time in a spa, which will be fantastically overpriced. Better to potter off to Bali for a week and do spa stuff there; much more relaxing, not much else to do, half the price and ten times the quality.
Having said that, if cost really is not an issue then the best luxury hotel with dedicated professional spa (as opposed to a health club which does massage) is the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge:

Your wife will be pleased to be right opposite Harvey Nichols and a short trot to Harrods.
Do book NOW for Afternoon Tea.
If you were just looking for a non chain hotel, I would probably recommend The Draycott Hotel, formerly the Cliveden Town House:
As an alternative outside London I would tip the Four Seasons Hampshire, best Hotel and Spa in England and stunningly personalised service:

Sanderson is a nice hotel, I have visited the bar a few times and stayed in sister properties St. Martin’s Lane, Delano, Mondrian and the Clift in San Francisco.
Sanderson might be a little too contemporary and Soho-focussed for a 50-something couple; I have found service patchy and some tiny, tatty rooms in many Morgans Hotel Group properties, but I always LOVE their bars and restaurants, which are top notch and the Agua Spa gets some good reviews:
