If you are an existing BA Shareholder make sure you read the latest edition of Overview (The Magazine for British Airways Shareholders) June 2009 Issue 42 page 16.

The key points as stated on this page are:
“…the rules of the British Airways shareholder discount scheme will be amended with effect from January 1, 2010. Shareholders will only be eligible for the discount if they have registered to receive communications relating to their shares electronically….”

“…Remember: If you do not register your email address with us by October 1, 2009 you will not be eligible for the shareholder discount in future.”

This is a typical sneaky tactic from British Airways. Shareholders are effectively being forced to sign up for email communications whether they want it or not, to continue receiving the Shareholder discount in the future.

If you are not an existing BA Shareholder and are wondering what discount is currently available then the BA Shareholder Web site aimed a private investors is http://www.bashareholders.com The full terms and conditions of the Shareholder discount are available at http://media.corporate-ir.net/media_files/irol/69/69499/2009TermsandConditions.pdf

During May 2009 there was also a Business Traveller discussion about this benefit.

Must remember to start shorting BA’s shares tomorrow.

If I read the blurb on the website correctly, unless you opt in for mailed communications you will automatically be changed to e-mail so will keep the discount. I updated my details to e-mail and found that they also included my Sainsbury’s shares as they are looked after Computerserve. Much more convenient as I was able to change address online (which I forgot to do when I moved).

Its no big deal to sign up at Computershare. It will list ALL your shareholdings and give an up to date price and value.

No big deal to sign up. You are not bombarded with junk mail or promotional material, just interim and final results plus notice of AGM.

As stated above, it’s really easy to do this:

A quick reminder that you MUST register your email address with Computershare by October 2009 to continue receiving the 10% Shareholder Discount on all British Airways fares beyond 1 January 2010.

It takes about two minutes; you will need your shareholder reference number to hand:
