I know that this is a stupid question, what chance is there that BA will refund the excess fuel surcharge that they have extracted from people who have already booked flights for the coming months?

YES, BA will if…you ask them & if your ticket is refundable

To be fair to BA they don’t ask for people who book before a fuel charge increase to divvy-up the extra cash before they fly. I’m not sure we can have it all ways around.
