MarkivJParticipantHa, totally did not see it coming! That said, it’s one of my favourite cities in the US, very friendly people and a really nice historic city centre as well. I’m sure the Boeing expansion (and biotech industry expansion in South Carolina) also played in to the decision. 2x weekly seems less though, don’t most airlines open new routes with at least 3x weekly?

FDOS_UKParticipantYawn………….
Another US route, twice weekly, isn’t going to help UK businesses building new markets post Brexit.
Just wait until AA decide there’s more profit in competing, than running a JV (or the competition authorities do it, for them).
Meanwhile, if you wish to go to emerging markets in Africa…..

MarkivJParticipantI’m still baffled by this decision, but hopefully they know better.
If they needed to fill
Up just 2 slots, they could’ve used these slots to “complete” frequencies to other cities – Seattle for instance. They fly 10x weekly during winter and 12x summer. These 2 slots could’ve made it a double daily (the demand is there, FAs too have admitted that it’s the lack of slots at LHR. bA’s partnership with Alaska airlines has fuelled cruise and transit traffic too).I’ve flown on AA from CLT-CHS and it’s been ok. So many flights a day. The transit experience seemed fine. So not sure why transit was quoted as a reason. Are they seeing that much transit traffic?!

Jasonltd1ParticipantI guess because BA want to expand their range – why do more to SEA when they can give the customers the chance to fly to a new state. That’s why the PIT route is good as it’s a gateway to Cleveland, VW and others. I still think Portland would have been a better bet though…

Stowage222ParticipantThis is a good move for the golfers out there as Myrtle Beach is only a couple of hours away. Saves connecting via ATL.

MarkivJParticipantJason, my point was more – if all they’re going to offer is 2x weekly flights to kick off with, it doesn’t seem like much of a strong incentive to want to target a new destination. SJC, PIT, AUS, even OAK all started out with at least 5. I can’t remember the last one BA started a long haul out of LHR with just 2x

nevereconomyParticipantThat one puzzled me when I saw it – SC has some lovely beaches and of course the golf might give hem some J business. Maybe makes as much sense as some of the other destinations they serve one or two days a week…

Yes, what surprised me most was not the destination so much as the frequency. The only other (longhaul) destination that has a less that three day per week service is Seychelles which I guess makes sense as people would tend to go for a week/two weeks. Even the other new US destinations that BA launched (Nashville or New Orleans for example) started off with a three or four time weekly service.
I guess the difference with say Seychelles verus Charlston is that if someone was to search on ba.com for a flight to Charlston any day of the week it would display a one stop option whereas the Seychelles it only offers the two non stops per week.
Perhaps there is also an element of aircraft utilisation in the decision. There might just not be another 787 to offer say a a third weekly service.

It must also be noted that some US regional airports grant “help” if it’s a new long-haul international route.
Pittsburgh is a good example:
