BA Euro Traveller Seat Allocation – a tiny moral dilemma

Coincidentally I was reading an article a few days ago about how to blag the seats you want (among other things) on an airline without paying extra. This ruse was the one highlighted – don’t pay then look for someone sympathetic and ask to swap!

It’s happened a few times to me:
Once JNB-ZRH in F, seat 1K, a man asked if I would swap with his wife in 2A so they could be closer together. No problem for me as it was also a single window seat, and as long as I have a window seat I’m happy.

MXP- DOH, Business, a couple asked if I would swap, but it meant going further back and giving me a middle aisle seat. That was a big NO!

Then Kulula, I pay to sit in the first three rows, window seat. The number of times I’ve been asked to swap to make way for a family etc, but in every case the seat was mid to end of aircraft and an aisle. All were very firmly refused.

So in answer Globetrotter, I’d would not swap unless the seat was to a better one, it suited me, or, if they paid me what I’d paid for the seat. Have no conscience on this dilemma!

Have actually had two good experiences of seat-changing. First was EK 777 DXB-MAN in J when I offered to give up my window seat to someone who was clearly flying with the person in the seat next to me (both England cricket team). I ended up in aisle seat in middle block…and then got Sir Alex Ferguson and wife next to me, which was a real bonus.

Second experience was TG BKK-DEL on A330. When I got to my Ec Class window seat it was occupied by teenage girl. Older man in aisle seat then asked if I would swap seats with him, so he could sit with his daughter….his was a Business Class seat! Needless to say I happily accepted the offer!

I saw something on the BA flight from LHR to SIN last week. My husband and I were in WTP and there was a woman in front of us who was clearly crying and appeared upset. All the staff were very good trying to placate and make sure she was ok, and I heard her say that she was petrified of flying and she was off to see her boyfriend in SIN.

Just after the doors closed the CSD came to her and said they would move her to J so she could get some sleep etc etc!

I am sure I saw a smile on her face as she was escorted to the BC cabin …. Fair play if it was a ruse it certainly worked 🙂

Sat next to a gentleman on EDI-AUH J, and I offered my seat , so that he could sit next to his wife. He declined, saying that he had been travelling through Scotland with her for the last two weeks, and wanted to chat more with me about golf. I now have a standing invitation to play with him whenever I am in Dubai.
