AllOverTheGaffParticipant*Sigh* – Thanks to AA’s inability to stick to the schedule I’d booked and paid for, I have the pleasure of flying CW JFK – LHR at the end of November on a 747-400.
This will be the last sector in a whole load of flights, many of which are on AA’s new 777 product (cannot thank Tim Fitzgerald enough for his advice in avoiding old AA planes!), so from spanking new innovative direct aisle access seating to antiquated old hemmed-in-climbing-over passengers seating. I know I should have more of an open mind, but given BA want to relieve me of £80.00 for the honour of choosing which seat I sit in I am struggling to see an up side other than flying with them means I don’t have to sit at JFK all day waiting on a shiny new AA aircraft. I think I’ll take my chances on seating although I fear I might end up in the inside of one of the 4.

Gaffy – (hee hee, I like that name!)….. Gaffy, I’m assuming you have no BA status, so can TimF not help you out here with the seat allocation on BA – I know some TAs can pre-allocate seats at time of booking, if he booked it for you or had access to your booking? If all your other flights are on AA and this is the final sector on BA, can you see the BA flight on your bookings in AA.com and do they let you seat select on there?
It is just that when I booked award flights on BA.com but on AA metal, seats were automatically selected and I didn’t like their auto choice. I couldn’t change them at all on BA.com, but I could if I logged onto AA.com My BA locator did not work on AA.com, so be aware of that also, but you will get an AA locator if you log into “manage your booking” on aa.com with other details. (But you would have an AA locator already.)
Gosh I hope that makes some sort of sense! 🙂

Unfortunately I made the mistake of not booking this particular journey with Tim, his assistance has been purely complimentary and gratefully received. I was staring down the barrel of an overnight from GRU – JFK on non-lie flats followed by a 9 hour wait on my flight back to LHR, I was also flying to GRU from JFK on AA’s old plane, but I was kindly advised how to make all the changes by Tim and which flights to ask for, has worked out a treat and even though the timings are pants (that wasn’t optional – all the schedule changes were horrible) I am now on new AA planes in a comfy lie flat bed.
Re BA and seating – there’s nothing can be done other than pay BA £80.00 for the seat, which I might just eat up and book so I am upstairs, it is a daytime flight and I’ll have just arrived from GRU on AA’s lie flats so will be rested.
Other option is that by the time I get to Brazil I might be Silver, but I don’t know if I can wait that long, there’s a few seats still available upstairs, and for eighty quid, when I look at it as a percentage of what I spend on flights, it is probably worth the hit – I’m just loathed to pay for it as it is quite an unnecessary charge.
(Leg is GRU – JFK – LHR – GLA – long journey!)

critical999ParticipantCouldn’t agree more. Unfortunately BA have ben far too big for far too long, and historically far too expensive, Although Iberia are doing the same now, some of BA inflight services have also deteriorated and are becoming below mediocre. In particular I find the club Europe service sickening

critical999ParticipantCouldn’t agree more BA has been far too big for far too long and personally I feel needs to be broken up. For far too long they have been historically too expensive, although Iberia now appears to be catching on to.
Some of the inflight services on club Europe have now become below mediocre , and suffice to say, especially when you are paying premium fares. enough is enough15 Aug 2013

LuganoPirateParticipant777/787/380’s, nice planes, but I so prefer the 747. Never mind, I suppose that’s progress! I still think it’s such a shame though to see those graceful old birds go. I’ll miss them. I also so wish they’d bought the 748. Alas not, or perhaps they’ll pick them up cheap from Lufty in 2020???

IanFromHKGParticipantI think it’s outrageous to charge to select seating on a long-haul business paid ticket. Is it just me?
AOTG, I hope you are going to write a report on the new AA seat – I am flying one of them in mid-September and will definitely do one. Who knows, I might win another prize 😉
