I read this but I don’t think all is as it seems. While Amex will not comment, on that amount it’s likely Christie’s and AMEX did a deal on the commission. It is after all good publicity for both of them.

Next, his bookings will be subject to availability and we all know it is very hard to get more than one or two free first class suites on Singapore (let alone other airlines).

However, if all is as it seems, then 3,000 flights at lets say $10,000 average per flight equals a value of $30,000,000 equivalent to a discount on his purchase of 17.5%. Not bad at all!

A person who spends that sort of money on a painting…. do you seriously think he is worried about the cost of a First Class suite or a PJ ? 🙂

$170m gets you the painting, not a lifetime of free First Class flights.

(For one thing, even if they do redeem points for airline miles and hence flights, these are never free – even if you can book a seat on the flight that you want!)

If he’s got a spare USD170million knocking around to buy a Modigliani, doesn’t he have already have his own private jet? I rather imagine that Mr Liu Yiqian is as alien to checking-in for a flight and rubbing shoulders with the great unwashed as any senior comrade in the egalitarian paradise (cough) of the People’s Republic.

More impressed with the winner of the marathon in the first modern olympics (1896)….awarded free travel on greek railways for life and the right for free transport of his bike in the guardsvan
Spiro Lewis (!) worked hard for his prize rather than taking advantage of hard-working but impoverished compatriots in the so-called People’s Republic

Presumably he is still around, using Greek railways to the max and single-handedly explaining the fact that the Greek rail network is amongst the biggest loss makers per passenger kilometre of any railway in the world…

Not so accurate as he still have to pay for taxes, fuel and other imposed surcharges on free tickets, which would amount to a hefty sum if calculated on a lifetime basis for say 4 creatures..
