Flight 1352: Miami International Airport (MIA) – Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

    Date: 05/7/2015

    Arrival at Airport:

American airlines usually has 8 non-stop flights from Miami, 6 of which are flown with a 737-800, 1 with a 767-300 ER, and finally with 1 777-200ER. I personally prefer flying in a 777 because it is a 5 hour and 30 minute flight, and this aircraft is typically used on the 7:00am flight or 12:00pm flight.

Miami International Airport has a special Flagship Lounge check-in which allows for a speedy check-in process and a breezy through security. The staff where very friendly and greeted me by my name due to the fact that I fly with AA's flagship service very frequent; and i found this to be a very nice touch. Once checked-in I was offered to be escorted to the lounge but I didn't need to be escorted, It makes me feel odd lol.

    Airport Lounges:

American Airlines has 3 different lounges in MIA. One at gate D15, another at gate D30 and finally one in concourse E which they share with One World Alliance members: Iberia, British Airways, Airberlin and others. The concourse E lounge is personally my favorite because it is more of a first class lounge than the others, but unfortunately it opens at 1:00pm therefore I was stuck with the other business class.

You can read more about the Concourse E lounge in my Iberia Review coming soon in late July along with a video of their Airbus a330-200 Business Plus product.

Fortunately I was boarding at D30 which right in front of the larger Admirals Lounge. This lounge is more of a business class lounge. It only offers simple snacks like fruits, nuts, pretzels, a coffee machine and only 2 complimentary drinks. For being a first class lounge this is pretty disappointing being that I paid $3,000 US dollars for this ticket. Thankfully as mentioned before, I fly frequently through MIA because it is my hub airport, so the staff already knew me and made the experience some what more enjoyable.

    Boarding:

Surprisingly the flight was on-time and boarding went smoothly. Once onboard the purser introduced himself and offered my guest and I champagne, orange juice, mimosas or water. He also asked if I would like to hang my coat which I found funny because it was 90 degrees (32 degrees celsius). Once plane was full, captain asked for cross check and we quickly departed.

    The Seat:

American Airlines Flagship suite is very comfortable yet out dated, it is very spacious and offers a lot of room for storage and privacy, but it is still unacceptable having to pay $3,000 dollars for a domestic flight and over $8,000 dollars for a international flight. Hopefully American catches up with the Middle Eastern, Asian and European Airlines like Emirates, Cathay Pacific or Swiss air.

One of my favorite features of this seat is its ability to swivel towards your companion or towards the window which optimizes privacy. If you are sitting in the middle row and are traveling alone there is also a decent privacy divider. The screen is very small (10 in) which is kind of disappointing for a first class product, but to be honest, it is not a big deal.

The seat pitch is 90 inches and extends to a fully lie-flat bed measuring 6'6 feet.

    On Board Experience:

After the 20 minute mark after take off, Lunch service began and meal orders where taken. We were offered a drink once again and went for the champagne. I must say I was impressed with American Airlines service.

    Starter:

-Smoked Salmon – Served with cream cheese, caper berry and toast points

    Salad:

-Seasonal Greens with Red Quinoa and Tabbouleh – choice of pepper cream dressing or premium extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar

    Entrees:

-Cranberry and Almond Crusted Chicken Breast – roasted sweet potatoes and broccolini
-Black and Bleu Salad with Sweet Potato Red Curry Soup – Served with optional grilled beef and vegetables skewer

-Red Bell Pepper Stuffed with Fava Bean Risotto – with Parmesan cheese served in a roasted red pepper sauce
    Desserts:

-Traditional Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Sundae – choice of fudge, butterscotch or seasonal berry toppings with pecans
-Gourmet Cheese Plate- red cheddar, blue cheese and Montero Farmer White

P.S – When flying first class in most 5 star airlines, they come to your seat with a cart full of different cheeses and cut it in-front of you, American Airlines just brings it out to you already pre-made in the Miami food factory.

    Post-Lunch:

Once the lights went out, flight attendants past out water bottles. Just to add a note, the flight attendants on this flight where excellent. They were very professional, friendly and efficient.

I managed to sleep 2 hours out of the almost 6 hour flight. When I woke up they began getting ready for the pre arrival snack which was a cookie backed on board.

Amenity Kit included: Chap stick, eye covers, socks, a pen, hand cream, moisturizer and tissues.

    Overall Rating:

    Airport and Lounge: 7/10

    Boarding: 9/10

    Food: 9/10

    Service: 9/10

    Seat: 9/10

    Bed and Amenities: 8/10

    IFE: 10/10

    Overall: 8.1/10
