“Air New Zealand is likely to send the world’s first Boeing 787-9 onto the Auckland-Shanghai route when this stretched version of the Dreamliner makes its debut in the second half of next year.”

Very interesting that AirNZ will roll out the 787 onto existing routes rather than new routes.

    That was not unexpected.

Most other airlines are replacing existing routes first before using it for new routes. There are several good reasons:
    -Monitor performance
-Allow contingency time in case of delays, you don’t want to ruin a big launch (eg. Qatar Doha-Perth or JAL Tokyo-Boston, both launches that were ruined)
-Familiarise crew and ground staff at existing stations
    -Retire older aircraft
