Since the moment the previous Duke of Edinburgh kicked the bucket. Just because you haven’t heard it’s hereditary doesn’t meant it’s not hereditary. ***edited by BT***

Alpine,** editedby BT** This is not a hereditary title and will, I understand, pass to the Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex rather than Prince Charles.

No. ***edied nby Bt*** I’m referring you instead to this: https://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/news-grants/news/item/187-hrh-the-duke-of-edinburgh.

This title is hereditary, so in point of fact it has already passed to Charles. He may well choose not to use it, and the Queen may well choose to re—assign it to Edward, and if she doesn’t when Charles becomes King the title will revert into the Crown anyway whereupon he as king will be able to bestow it upon Edward or indeed someone else. But right now this title lies with him. Whatever happens next is anyone’s guess, but it’s true the title was “promised” to Edward, something which appears to have raised some eyebrows at the time.

So there. Regardless, coming back to the substantive topic, which was the ridiculous idea of renaming airports: even if the idea had some merit as opposed to being specious and hubristic, the name suggested here could never work because of its lack of specificity — it’s just a title that can be held by different persons at different points in time. It’s a bit as if the Crossrail in London had been baptised instead of “Elizabeth Line” as “HM the Queen Line” — yes, but which Queen?

I’m going to close this for a while since it is getting too heated and whatever anyone thinks of the Royal Family we can’t have accusations of racism etc… being made the day before the funeral.
