Interesting piece (by Simon Calder) which involved the second runway at Gatwick.

“A mix-up over Gatwick’s two runways meant that dozens of passengers on a Singapore flight arrived in Southeast Asia without their baggage.

The Sussex airport has a main runway and a shorter standby runway. Gatwick Airport had planned to close the runway every night this week, from 10.30pm to 6am, for maintenance….

…Facing the need to reduce weight in order to comply with performance limits, the captain ordered some passenger bags to be removed from the hold.

Ironically, Gatwick Airport told The Independent that when operations staff became aware of the late departure to Singapore, they arranged for the main runway to remain open to accommodate its take-off. Had this been known earlier, the baggage could have stayed onboard.”

I’m pretty sure Edinburgh airport only has one runway remaining as the shorter original runway was closed in March to make way for more space to expand terminals and aircraft parking.

Inevitable that both LGW and STN will have dual runways – no other way the demand can be met.
Its just a matter of time (unless a new airport on B.Is. or Foulness Is?) and a political party that has the capability of pushing them through?

This news is not really new as Gatwick airport has reserved land for a second runway for some years now. It has also used, on an occasional basis, the parallel taxiway to the main runway when demand or maintenance has dictated it.
However, it is interesting to see the previous comments on this thread as the latest dates November 2018, three years ago, way before the pandemic.

A good time to get on with it I would have thought. God knows it been needed for generations.
