In the UK, it can be hard to generate AA miles. Other than flying and the MBNA AA card, the options are very sparse.

American Express doesn’t have AA as a travel partner, so you can’t directly transfer from Amex membership rewards into AA.

However, you can use SPG (Starwoods) as a conduit. Normally, if you do it in round amounts of 40K MR, you end up with 25K AA. However during the month of July, your 40K MR will get you 30K AA, which might be useful to some to bring their existing AA balance up enough to do an AA redemption.

Normal calculation is MR to SPG 2:1 ie 40k MR = 20K SPG. SPG then give a 5K bonus if you transfer 20K to a FFP. This gives the 25K figure. But you can transfer a lower amount if you don’t have 40K MR or don’t require 25K airline miles, but you will miss out on the 5K bonus.

You can of course transfer non-round amounts of 40K, including less that 40K, but doing so gets you less AA miles for your MR..

4:3 MR:AA (via SPG) is as good as I’ve seen within the UK, and requires a 40K transfer of MR, or multiples thereof.
