One of the reasons 2-5-2 was adopted was that fewer people had to move when people wanted to get out of the seats. Anyone in a bank of 3 on the window and potentially 2 people have to get out of their seats to let you out (x 2 for each side of the plane). However the only time 2 people might have to move on 2-5-2 is the person in the middle of the 5 – and only 2 people would have to move on 1 side. So it was partly a mathematical thing.

But I wouldn’t like to be stuck in middle of the bank of 5 – must feel very claustrophobic. Great if very quiet flight and you get all 5 seats though for a “Business Economy” flat seat to lie out on.

Speedbird_ABZ – yes you are right Varig did have that config as did Swissair on some of their MD11’s.

In fact ANA still has a similar config on some of it’s non ten abreast 777-300’s. The 250 seat variant is in a 2-4-3 config.
