Check in at LHR-T4 was quick and straight forward at the dedicated First Class desk.
Fast track through security and we were in the lounge 12 minutes after entering the terminal.
Have to agree with others that the new Qatar Lounge really is very good indeed, the only thing lacking was some bacon for breakfast!
Boarding called 45 minutes before take off, so out of the Lounge and first gate on the left. Met at the gate and escorted to our seats 1E/F, front row – center. So far so good, it is nice to addressed by name.
Departure was on time.
First impressions of space and luxury soon tempered by ergonomic shortfalls in the seat. Despite instruction from the cabin supervisor I found the 'I-pad' seat controls confusing. Maybe OK for a tech-savy youngster but for a 72 year old still on Windows XP, initially rather difficult. The IFE screen was vast and HD, but I did not use it choosing to read instead, partly for similar reasons. There were electrically driven screens between the seats which when raised created quite a cosy and private space
Post take of drinks included the usual Krug and came promptly.
The biggest problem was with the leg support which when partially raised left ones feet and lower calf suspended in mid air. Not good for the Achilles tendons. Fortunately by driving the seat fully forward I could put my feet on the ottoman.
The 'A-La Carte menu was varied and acceptable and given the total flexibility offered should have been perfect. however our first course of Scallops was served cold and was sent back! The remainder of the meal -Lamb shank – went without hitch concluding with an excellent desert wine and a good cheese board with a glass of port
The seat really is huge and offers 'dining for 2' but the ottoman used as the second seat is not at the same height as the main seat so not very practical.
The washrooms are really something, truly enormous. A full length wall seat containing a 'hidden' WC and a wash basin with hands free taps. These are either side of the stairs leading down to the lower deck. The stairs have a simple barrier at the bottom to dissuade access from the economy cabin below but nothing at the top to prevent somebody taking a dive down the stairs in the event of turbulence of even a missed footing.
After lunch we decamped to the onboard lounge. This really is a bonus. Spacious, adequate seating, beautifully appointed with fresh flowers and a real relief from the 'cabin syndrome' even in First. But on our flight not much used as the majority of the passengers in Business and First chose either to work of sleep so we had an hour or so over an after dinner drink with just 3 others and the 'bar staff'. Most enjoyable. I do hope that this excellent facility does not get removed (as on the A340-600) due to lack of use.
We could have dined again before landing if needed.
Arrival in Doha was on time and deplaning immediate. We were met at the door by a Qatar service agent and personally escorted to the Business Lounge to await our onward flight.
Nice Aircraft, just adequate seat, good staff, good food and wine but a lack of attention to detail.
