Probably to ensure the completion of the Investigation into the BA38 crash, the remains of the airframe, minus the tailfin and with the BA logo painted over, was stored outside at LHR, shrouded in a white barrier near the enginerring hangars to the west of the airport.
Unnervingly, the plane was clearly visible on approach.
Thankfully, the investigation is now complete, and the wreckers have moved in to complete the final disposal of the airframe, salvageable elements the interior of which will be used as spares, the rest to be disposed of.
Rather a shame to lose this, as this was one of BAs better and younger 777s, but cynically the reduction in fleet capacity and the insurance payout can’t have done too badly for BA at this difficult time in the aviation cycle.
A very lucky escape, and a reminder to keep your setbelt fastened tightly especially on approach even when it seems everything is going to plan.
